A Quick Guide to identifying Schwinn Hydramatics:
The easiest way to begin identifying the Hydramatics is with the curved downtube,
there were other Schwinn BMX bikes made with this curved downtube including
the Powermatics, Supermatics Hydraglides and Powerglides, so this characteristic
is not specific to the Hydramatics. If the bike or frame has a set of
Hydramatic Decals the one way to get close on the year is the color of the frame,
althought that too can be somewhat confusing:
By Frame Color:
Yellow Frames and Green Frames:
1998 Hydramatics were both "Yellow and Dirty Metalic Green" the only year they made the Yellow
but in 1999 the Hydramatic was available in "Army Green" At this point in time I can not determine
the difference between the two greens, nor is there any individual decal characteristic that leads me
to tell the two apart, you have to look closer. To tell the 1998 and 1999 Model apart the first thing to
look for is the Jay Miron Signature decal, if it has one, it should be a 1999 model, failing that, look
at the brake levers, the 1998 Model should have Dia-Compe 990 brakes with Dia-Compe Tech 77
levers while the 1999 model should have come stock with Tetro brakes and levers.
White Frames:
White frames: the Hydramatics were offered in "Pearl White Metallic" as the 1998 Hydramatic Comp and also in a
"Creamed Coffe" as the 2000 signature frame. If the decals are there it will be easy to note the Comp labels
also the seat tube decal edges run horizontal to the tube in 1998 and vertical in 2000.
If the decasl are gone double check the rear flat spot of the top tube behind the seat for the small
"Canadian Beast" sticker, if however the decals are again missing entirely from the frame
the three piece crank arms might tell the difference, in 1998 they are chrome and solid
while in 1999 they are hollow tubular and typically black.
Red Frames:
Red framed Hydramatics present the biggest identifying issue
If the bike or frame is red, is it a 1999 Hydramatic Comp or a
or a 2000 Hydramatic Team or a Canadian Beast.
If the decals are still there it should be a simple thing to tell, if
they are not still there and the frame/bike is still red, and if it has been
unaltered from it's original equipment then the 1999 should have
the older 44 tooth chainwheel and the 2000 chainwheel should be
solid, also the 99 should be equiped with Alec AL-FTS-25 triple wall rims
where as the 2000 model came with the Araya RB-J1 triple wall rims,
but since those pieces might be missing it
may be even more difficult to determine.
